Platinum

Platinum is considered as one of the most rare and precious metals. Its physical appearance is silver-white to gray.It is a transition metal with high degree of malleability and ductility.

Platinum will not oxidize unless it is in the presence of bases as it has a high resistance to chemical reactions and thus does not corrode easily. This precious metal resists tarnishing. It is also known as one of the heaviest elements. This property along with its tarnish resistance makes it one of the best metals for many purposes.

Platinum has many industry uses. It is used for wide variety of purposes from jewelry and dentistry to lab equipment and thermometers; it is used in laboratory equipments and in dental alloys. It's used as a catalyst for making acids and pharmaceuticals. This metal is also used in electrical contacts, in capacitors, as conductive or resistive films for electronic circuits.

Platinum does resemble silver but is priced more like gold.

The chemical symbol for the element platinum is Pt. its atomic number is 78 and its atomic mass is 195.1.
